John William Powell

John William Powell, son of the late Cecil Carl Powell and Clarice Sellars Powell, was born April 23, 1936 in Sweet Gum Hollow of the Johnsonview Community in Violet Hill, Arkansas. He departed this life January 15, 2021 in Searcy, Arkansas at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 23 days. John was born, raised and attended school in Violet Hill. After graduation, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. He taught sixth grade at Violet Hill and Salem Schools, retiring after 33 years of teaching. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Ann Davis and together they raised two sons. John was a gifted musician who played the guitar, fiddle and harmonica. He was of the Methodist faith and was a member of Wiseman Methodist Church.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 60 years: Carolyn Powell of the home; two sons: John Robert Powell and wife Lynda of Heber Springs and Franklin Davis Powell and wife Deana of Searcy; four grandchildren: Jessica Powell of Washington, D.C., Johnathan Powell of Searcy, Ashley Wygal and husband Kerry of Clearwater, Florida and Anna-Grace Powell of Pangburn and a host of other relatives and many good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister: Doris Small and one infant sister.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 19 from 6-8 p.m. at Eddie's Family Funeral Home in Melbourne. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Fairview Baptist Church with John Hodges officiating. Burial will be at Violet Hill Cemetery.
