Obituary

Cheng-Tien Luke passed away October 12, 2024 in Melbourne, AR at the age of 92. He was born to Luke Him Sau and Ng Shukching in Shanghai, China February 3, 1932. His childhood was during a tumultuous time in China due to World War ll and the Japanese invasion.  War times brought massive inflation and general chaos which led to the family to relocate to Chongqing where he attended boarding school. Later the family moved to Hong Kong to join his grandfather and extended family there.

Luke grew up in China and Hong Kong until coming to the U.S. in 1950  for his college studies. In 1959  he completed  his master's at MIT and married Gwendolyn Marie Gordon.  He taught at Gonzaga in Spokane, WA and later continued teaching Civil Engineering at Prairie View A&M University for many years. After retiring he and his wife came to Arkansas to be nearer to his daughter and enjoy more rural life.  He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Calico Rock and Belview Baptist in Melbourne. Known for his smile and kind generous spirit he is fondly remembered by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother Shing-Yip Luk, and an infant son Andrew.  He leaves behind sons Jonathan Luke (Hsiao-Jane), Timothy Luke (Camille), daughter Joanne Sumrall (Jess), grandchildren Ethan Sumrall, Nathanael, Luke, Barnabas Luke, Andrew Luke, Peter Luke, and Hannah Luke. He is also survived by one brother Shing-Char Luke as well as nieces and nephews.

Thank you to Woodcrest Assisted Living for treating him like family during his stay there and Pioneer Therapy and Living for caring for him in his last days.
